Hackers launch phishing attack on Facebook users

Quoted from Reuters (05/15/2009) that Hackers launched an attack on Facebook's 200 million users on Thursday, successfully gathering passwords from some of them in the latest campaign to prey on members of the popular social networking site.

Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt said on Thursday that the site was in the process of cleaning up damage from the attack.

He said that Facebook was blocking compromised accounts.

Schnitt declined to say how many accounts had been compromised.

The hackers got passwords through what is known as a phishing attack, breaking into accounts of some Facebook members, then sending e-mails to friends and urging them to click on links to fake websites.

Those sites were designed to look like the Facebook home page. The victims were directed to log back in to the site, but actually logged into the one controlled by the hackers, unwittingly giving away their passwords.

The purpose of such attacks is generally identify theft and to spread spam.

The fake domains include www.151.im, www.121.im and www.123.im. Facebook has deleted all references to those domains.

Schnitt said that Facebook's security team believes the hackers intended to collect a large number of credentials, then use those accounts at a later time to send spam hawking fake pharmaceuticals and other goods to Facebook members.

The site fought off a similar attack two weeks ago, he said.

Privately held Facebook and rival social network MySpace, which is owned by News Corp, require senders of messages within the network to be members and hide user data from people who do not have accounts. Because of that, users tend to be far less suspicious of messages they receive.

Hackers used a phishing attack last year to spread a malicious virus known as Koobface (a reference to Facebook). It was downloaded onto Facebook members' PCs when they clicked on a link sent to them in an email that looked like it had been sent by a friend on Facebook.

Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4.0 Beta Updated Log Collection Utility

The Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 are now available, here are the new update for Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 by Microsoft.

One illustrative example in this regard is the Collect.exe log collection utility. The tool was updated and tailored to the successor of Visual Studio 2008 and .NET Framework 3.5. The Redmond company is asking testers running the Beta development milestones of Visual Studio 2010 Beta and .NET Framework 4.0 Beta to download the utility and use it to collect logs for submission when bugs are reported to the support website.

“While we have worked hard to reduce install times and installation issues and hope you don’t encounter any, in case you do experience an issue we encourage you to gather and upload logs using our updated log collection utility available for download. This will automatically package a lot of logs and product information we can use to diagnose problems and compress them into %TEMP%\vslogs.cab by default,” Heath Stewart, software design engineer DDCPX, Microsoft, revealed.

Visual Studio 2010 Beta and .NET Framework 4.0 Beta have been offered as public downloads starting on May 20, 2009. Stewart emphasized that the Collect.exe log collection utility was designed to help Microsoft deal with any issues testers came across during the setup process of the next version of Visual Studio and .NET Framework.

“If you encounter any setup issues, we will need all relevant logs. Please follow the instructions below to collect all those logs. Download collect.exe. You may choose to save the tool for later use, or to run directly. The utility creates a compressed cabinet of all the VS and .NET logs to %TEMP%\vslogs.cab,” Stewart said. At the same time, he indicated that testers should initially check to see whether their issue hadn't been already submitted.

Facebook raises $200 million from Russian Internet firm

Thats amazing, i need to setup a Facebook acc too..

Facebook Inc. said Tuesday it has raised $200 million from a Russian Internet firm in a deal that values the online social-networking service at roughly two-thirds the amount set when Microsoft Corp. came on board as an investor in late 2007.

Palo Alto, Calif.-based Facebook said Digital Sky Technologies will take a 1.96% ownership stake that values it at $10 billion. Microsoft's /quotes/nls/msft (MSFT 20.34, +0.59, +2.99%) $240 million investment in Facebook less than two years ago, for a 1.6% ownership stake, implied a valuation of $15 billion. See full story.

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, in a conference call with reporters, cited external economic conditions for the difference in valuations, in addition to the more complete partnership implied in the Microsoft deal.

"We did the Microsoft investment ... at the absolute peak of the market," Zuckerberg said. "That was a year and a half ago, and the world was in a pretty different place at the time."

In addition, Zuckerberg said, Microsoft's investment "was just one piece" of a deal that also involved developing online advertising formats. "Relative to the economic conditions for when the Microsoft deal happened... we feel really good about the progress we've made," the CEO said.

Zuckerberg said Facebook is in no urgent need of the new money. He said the company expects 70% annual revenue growth, and to become "cash flow positive" in 2010.

Founded in 2005, Facebook is expected to pull in some $230 million in revenue this year, compared with an estimated $210 million last year, according to research firm eMarketer. As a private company, Facebook doesn't disclose financial results.

In addition to its current investment, Digital Sky has also agreed to acquire as much as $100 million worth of common shares from current and former Facebook employees looking to liquidate some of their holdings in the company.

Facebook has long been searching for a way to allow employees to cash in on their equity, in lieu of a sale of the company or an initial public offering of its stock -- both an unlikely prospect any time in the near future. Late last year, Facebook delayed a plan to allow employees to sell a limited number of shares, citing the economic environment. See story about Facebook's delayed employee share sale.

Digital Sky Chief Executive Yuri Milner said that the purchase of Facebook employee shares "will happen in the next few months," but offered no further details.

Digital Sky, with offices in Moscow and London, focuses on Internet investments in the Russian and Eastern European markets, and says it has poured more than $1 billion into over 30 companies since 2005.

Facebook said Digital Sky will not receive a seat on the company's board as part of the investment.

"I have my own business to run," Milner said.

According to media reports, Facebook has been shopping around for some time to raise additional funding. The soaring popularity of its social-networking service has resulted in more than 200 million users, boosting the costs of its infrastructure such as data centers.

Zuckerberg said the company doesn't have "any specific plans to talk about" in terms of putting its new round of funding to work.

Wolfram Alpha Versus Google, who is the winner?

Wolfram Alpha VS Google LONDON - Wolfram Alpha is a new search engine that could recast the way we use the website.

As a new competitor of Google, often compared to Google.

Since launch last week, the  millions website users want to try the ability of this new search engine.

Stephen Wolfram, creator of the website says this on the first 24 hours Wolfarm Alpha started life online, he has received 10,000 messages as feedback from our users.

"Feedback that they send a very useful and entertaining. They give a lot of advice for Wolfarm Alpha progress in the future," he said as quoted from the Telegraph, Tuesday (5/20/2009).

Some analysts trying to compare Wolfarm Alpha with Google's to know the importance in which ability is often compared between Google and Wolfarm.

Here are five Wolfarm Alpha comparison with Google:
1. Estimated weather
Wolfram Alpha: the present results are grid-style seem less visually satisfying as is done by Google. However Wolfarm Alpha presents the latest information about the temperature, conditions, wind speed and relative humidity. Even equipped with the same historical weather data that occurred on the same day in different years in the past.

Google: With as many as 4,340,000 search results, Google also provides a glimpse weather in particular regions with the temperature data and weather forecast three days future.

Which is better? for practical use, Google is winning in this case. Meanwhile, Wolfram Alpha has advantages in providing historical weather words.

2) What is 46 km per hour in a matter of feet per second?
Wolfram Alpha: Results from Wolfram tells that 46km per hour, equivalent to 41.92 feet per second. This information is very helpful to know the speed in meters per second, miles per minute even in knots.

Google: While Google can do many tasks and the conversion only with the 1.8 m in ft, for example, but Google should admit the benefits of Wolfarm Alpha in this case. If users want to get the answers questions such as this precisely through Google, must avoid the acronym. While Wolfarm Alpha can do this better.

3) Plot Ai(x)

Wolfram Alpha: When typing this sentence, analysts do not know the purpose this question. However, Wolfarm Alpha respond with a graph showing two believed that the sense of a genius mathematic owned by Wolfarm Alpha.

Google: What about Google? This search engine provides search results of 674,000 that is not useful. Fact, for this Wolfarm Alpha be more responsive and genius in responding to difficult questions such as this.

4) The characters in Star Wars
Wolfram Alpha: this search engine respond to questions with answers Spock-like, appears to be Wolfarm Alpha does not seem confident with the answers that result in a search engine.

Google: top results on Google showed the link to the Wikipedia page of a site that displays detail information of a characters in Star Wars. This adds the benefits of Google.

5) The highest mountain
Wolfram Alpha: In surprise, the results do not reveal anything on this search. Apparently an error occurred on the input language search bar. When replaced with a sentence that is correct, then Wolfarm Alpha search results display the five highest mountains. However, it can be seen that Wolfarm Alpha does not have the capacity in correction input language automatically.

Google: Instead, as predicted earlier, Google is more responsive. Google automatically presents a list of 100's highest mountain with the height data, the point coordinates, and completeness of data supporting the other more comprehensive.

Street View under fire in Japan

Google's Street View service suffered a second blow this week after numerous complaints in Japan forced the firm to start reshooting all the photos.

Cameras attached to the Street View car were "too high" for Japanese buildings, allowing them to see over walls into private areas.

Google said it would lower the cameras on its cars by 40cm (16in).

On 12 May, Greece's data protection agency ordered Google to stop filming because of privacy concerns.

In a statement, Google said it would make "locally appropriate modifications to ensure a better user experience".

"We have lowered the height of the camera due to the unique characteristics of many Japanese roads; they tend to be narrow, without pavements and driveways, and houses are built close to the street," the statement said.

"We think the new camera height allows us to get a high-quality image of the street while respecting the privacy of homeowners."

The Street View service covers 12 cities in Japan, including Tokyo and Osaka.

Timeline

First launched in the US two years ago, Street View now covers nine countries including the United Kingdom, and Google wants to expand the service to cover all of Europe.

Users zoom in to a location in Google Maps, and then drag the "Pegman" icon above the zoom bar on to a given street.

A picture of that street appears, which users can control to get a 360-degree view of the area or to progress on street level, throughout the city.

Google says the service shows only imagery already visible from public thoroughfares.

However, it has come in for criticism from some quarters, being accused of an invasion of privacy.

Earlier this week, Greece's data protection agency banned Google from expanding its Street View service in the country, pending "additional information" from the firm.

Authorities want to know how long the images will be kept on Google's database and what measures it will take to make people aware of privacy rights.

In the UK, residents near Milton Keynes blocked the driver of a Google Street View car in April when he started taking photographs of their homes saying the service was "facilitating crime".

The Pentagon has also banned Google from filming near or inside its military bases, saying it posed a "potential threat" to security.

Download : new version of AJAX Control Toolkit

The AJAX Control Toolkit provides server and client side functionality that developers can quickly integrate to AJAX enable their Web applications. The ASP.NET team has just released a new version of AJAX Control Toolkit including three new controls HTMLEditor, ColorPicker, and ComboBox.

HTML Editor Control

The HTMLEditor control includes options for changing font size, selecting a font, changing background color, modifying the foreground color, adding links, adding images, changing text alignment, and performing cut, copy, and paste operations

Color Picker Control

The ColorPicker control extender displays a popup dialog that enables you to select a color. The ColorPicker is useful whenever you want to provide an intuitive user interface for a user to pick a color.

Combo Box Control

The ComboBox control works like a combination between a standard ASP.NET DropDownList control and a TextBox control. You can either select from a pre-existing list of items or enter a new item.

Visual Studio 2010 Beta 1 expected as soon as next week

One of the biggest questions at Microsoft’s TechEd conference this week — other than the whereabouts of popular speaker and former Microsoft security expert Steve Riley — is where is the beta of Visual Studio 2010.

A number of TechEd attendees have tweeted that they’ve been eagerly awaiting information on the beta of Microsoft’s next version of its development suite, but to no avail.
It sounds from a couple of my tipsters that the Beta 1 releases of VS2010 and .Net 4 are both likely to be made available for download sometime over the next couple of weeks, and possibly as soon as the week of May 18.
Microsoft officials already have outlined broadly some of the new functionality expected in the VS2010 release, a product which many are expecting to ship in final form before the end of 2009. At TechEd this week, a few attendees mentioned additional specifics, such as the fact that Microsoft’s concurrent-programming language F# will ship in the VS2010 box, while Iron Python will “ship out of band, like F# does now.”
Another tweeter noted that the “Sharepoint TFS (Team Foundation Server) integration in VS2010 looks cool,” but developers will need an upgrade tool to move old 2008 projects into new templates.

Google unveils new tools

Google has announced a new application it hopes will make internet searches more relevant. The Google Search options will let users sort their results in several new ways to narrow their search down.

These include showing only pages with a certain type of content, those organized by date or time and graphical searches.

There is also a 'related searches' option. This feature suggests other possibilities that could aid searches. A 'Wonder Wheel' uses graphics to show people how related topics are clustered together.

Google Search options could prove particularly helpful for searches that are hard to express with keywords (such as 'Show me discussions about the Oscars in forums') or when you want to explore topics more broadly or refine them.

The tool will be available immediately so that when a user inputs search terms into the search box, there will be a 'show options' link.

Despite being the most popular search engine in the UK, the web giant said it could not afford to take anything for granted and has more new tools on the way.

Marissa Mayer, Google’s vice-president of products, said: "The race in search is far from over and innovation and continued improvement is absolutely pivotal. "

There are three new products in the pipeline worth watching out for. Rich Snippets will give additional information about the content of suggested website links. For example, a restaurant review may include menu prices.

Google Squared, which is expected to be made publicly available in a month or so, takes information from the web and displays in a spreadsheet. For example, a query for a small dog typed into the search box will bring up a table showing photos of various dogs, their origin, weight and height.

And the company also wants to reach out to the stars with Skymap. This application is for mobile phones using the Android operating system. By using a smartphone's GPS capabilities it will display the constellations and show the person where they are standing and which way they are pointing.

Final Fantasy XIII Is the Most Wanted Game for the PlayStation 3

The biggest announcement at the 2008 edition of the E3 trade show was that Microsoft had persuaded Square Enix to also bring Final Fantasy XIII to the Xbox 360. But the Japanese role playing game is still more interesting to those who plan to play it on the PlayStation 3, according to data compiled by research group OTX.

The data provided to Gamesutra shows which are the most wanted 20 videogames for the Sony made home gaming console. The chart was compiled during March and April, with about 1,000 gamers questioned.

God of War III, which is created by Sony Computer Entertainment Santa Monica, is in second place, with Madden NFL 10 from EA Sports being third in the most wanted chart. Assassin's Creed 2 from Ubisoft and Modern Warfare 2 from Infinity Ward complete the top five.

Tekken 6, from Namco Bandai, is sixth, followed by X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which is now out for all those who are interested in playing it. Uncharted 2 is also appealing to PS3 gamers, although its position is rather low, considering that it is an exclusive for the Sony platform. The new Need For Speed is at number nine, while Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time is at number ten.

The other half of the chart is made up off BioShock 2; Batman: Arkham Asylum; Fight Night Round 4; NCAA Football 10; Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10; Ghostbusters: The Video Game; Infamous; Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2: Fusion; Half-Life 2: Episode Three; UFC 2009 Undisputed.

It's interesting to see that the list is rather similar to that compiled by OTX for the Xbox 360. Infamous, which sits at number 17 in the most wanted chart, is the only new intellectual property that is interesting to gamers. There are no new IPs in the Xbox 360 chart.

1st fix for Windows 7 RC 32bit

A folder that is created under the root of the system drive is missing entries in its security descriptor, which may cause some application failures on the English version of Windows 7 Release Candidate 32-bit Ultimate

In the English version of Windows 7 Release Candidate (build 7100) 32-bit Ultimate, the folder that is created as the root folder of the system drive (%SystemDrive%) is missing entries in its security descriptor. One effect of this problem is that standard users such as non-administrators cannot perform all operations to subfolders that are created directly under the root. Therefore, applications that reference folders under the root may not install successfully or may not uninstall successfully. Additionally, operations or applications that reference these folders may fail.
For example, if a folder is created under the root of the system drive from an elevated command prompt, this folder will not correctly inherit permissions from the root of the drive. Therefore, some specific operations, such as deleting the folder, will fail when they are performed from a non-elevated command prompt. Additionally, the following error message appears when the operation fails:
Access is denied.
Furthermore, the missing security descriptor entries protect non-admin file operations directly under the root.

Mozilla and Opera still unhappy about Windows 7

Microsoft has a history of strategically monopolizing the browser sector in the computing world, among others. Presumably in keeping with recent antitrust action against the corporation from the European Commission, as previously reported, their latest OS, Windows 7, is featuring a first-time option to all but completely remove Internet Explorer, meaning a couple of clicks and a restart and your browser of choice will always be opened by default.

Apparently Mozilla -- makers of the ever-popular Firefox -- and Opera are not satisfied, however, still maintaining IE is given an unfair advantage due to it being the included browser by default. Mozilla's chairperson Mitchell Baker explains:

"Our initial review suggests this is a blatant use of the Windows operating system to change the market dynamics of browser usage. What we've seen so far is a clear example of why and how Microsoft's Windows monopoly damages competition in related products."

Opera were the ones who complained to the Commission over Microsoft's anti-competitive tactics, leading to a provisional finding against them. Their chief technology officer Hakon Wium Lie says they'd like to clear the air:

"This issue highlights the problem with the browser market. It's certainly something we would want to discuss."

Microsoft has stated the software, newly in the release candidate stage and previously in beta, was "only a test version aimed at a limited audience of experienced computer users" and the final experience will be different.

The proposed solution is to offer rival browsers as well as IE. Should this come to fruition, our suggestion, specifically (which is not to say this isn't asking too much), would be to offer a choice upon first installation, featuring a concise "preview" of each browser, instead of having three or more installed by default.

We look forward to seeing how this situation turns out in the final version of Windows 7; some headway should be made on June 3 following a meeting in Brussels.

In the meantime, what are your opinions? Are Mozilla and Opera's demands reasonable?

Windows 7 RC API Code Pack for .NET Framework

Windows API Code Pack for Microsoft .NET Framework is designed to permit developers to access a range of features associated with the next iteration of Windows that are not available in .NET Framework, in managed code.

Essentially, the package contains the source code library for features implemented in Windows 7, and even in Windows Vista. Version 0.85 of Windows 7 RC API Code Pack for .NET Framework went live following the availability of the first and only Release Candidate of Windows 7, which was served to MSDN and TechNet subscribers on April 30 and to the public on May 5.
“As a part of the Windows 7 RC release wave, the Windows SDK team has released the “Windows API Code Pack for Microsoft .NET Framework (v0.85)”. What is this code pack you may ask? This .NET source code supports new Windows 7 light-up developer features including the following: Shell features, Direct 3D 11.0, and Sensor Platform APIs,” revealed Gavin Gear, program manager at Microsoft for Windows SideShow.
The current release of the library is tailored to Windows 7 RC Build 7100. However, this does not mean that developers won't be able to use the release with Windows 7's precursors. Among the features made available with version 0.85, Microsoft enumerated: Windows 7 Task Dialogs; Windows 7 Explorer Browser Control supporting both WPF and Windows Forms; Helpers for Windows 7 Taskbar Jumplists, Icon Overlay and Progress bar; support for Windows Vista and Windows 7 common file dialogs; Support for Direct3D 11.0 and DXGI 1.0/1.1 APIs; Sensor Platform APIs; and Extended Linguistic Services APIs.
“This is a preview release, so it may change between now and RTM, but it does enable you to code against these features with your favorite .NET language for Windows 7. The sensor API code even includes samples (For accelerometer and light sensor) that show off the capabilities of the Windows 7 Sensor Development Kit hardware,” Gear added.

How 10 Iconic Tech Products Got Their Names?

Coming up with a great technology product or service is only half the battle these days. Creating a name for said product that is at once cool but not too cool or exclusionary, marketable to both early adopters and a broader audience, and, of course, isn't already in use and protected by various trademarks and copyright laws is difficult—to say the least.

The makers of these 10 tech products—the iPod, BlackBerry, Firefox, Twitter, Windows 7, ThinkPad, Android, Wikipedia, Mac OS X and the "Big Cats," and Red Hat Linux—all have displayed certain amounts marketing savvy, common sense and fun-loving spirit in settling on their products' names. Here are the intriguing, surprising and sometimes predictable accounts of their creation.

iPod: 'Open the pod bay door, Hal'

During Apple's MP3 player development, Steve Jobs spoke of Apple's strategy: the Mac as a hub to other gadgets. Vinnie Chieco, a freelance copywriter Apple hired to help name the gadget before its debut in 2001, fixed on that idea, according to Wired. He brainstormed hubs of all kinds, eventually coming to the concept of a spaceship. You could leave it, but you'd have to return to refuel. The stark plastic front of the prototype inspired the final connection: pod, a la 2001. Add an "i" and the connection to the iMac was complete.

BlackBerry: Sweet Addictiveness

Canada's Research in Motion called on Lexicon Branding to help name its new wireless e-mail device in 2001. The consultancy pushed RIM founders away from the word "e-mail," which research shows can raise blood pressure. Instead, they looked for a name that would evoke joy and somehow give feelings of peace. After someone made the connection that the small buttons on the device resembled a bunch of seeds, Lexicon's team explored names like strawberry, melon and various vegetables before settling on blackberry—a word both pleasing and which evoked the black color of the device.

Firefox: Second Time's a Charm

Choosing a name that evokes a product's essence and is available can be quite complicated, as the Mozilla folks found out. The early version of Mozilla's browser was called Firebird, but due to another open-source project with the same name, the Mozilla elders renamed their browser Firefox, which is another name for red panda. Why? "It's easy to remember. It sounds good. It's unique. We like it," they said. Best of all? Nobody else was using it.

Twitter: Connecting the Digital Flock 140 Characters at a Time

When cofounder Biz Stone saw the application that Jack Dorsey created in 2006 he was reminded of the way birds communicate: "Short bursts of information...Everyone is chirping, having a good time." In response, Stone came up with "twttr," and the group eventually added some vowels. It's hard to think of a more evocative name in the tech world than twitter, but what began as what Stone described as "trivial" bursts of communication developed into a powerful means of networking, breaking news, and a forum for the 44th U.S. president's campaign.

Windows 7: Counting on the Power of 7

While Microsoft's next OS has kind of a "ho-hum" name, one has only to look at what happened with the most recent Windows release to understand why Microsoft might have gone back to a tried-and-true naming philosophy: Vista? Ouch. Windows 95 and XP? Those have done much better. Microsoft's Mike Nash announced the name this way: "Simply put, this is the seventh release of Windows, so therefore 'Windows 7' just makes sense." We're betting that Microsoft execs are hoping that number 7 will deliver on its promise of luck—they could sure use a win after Vista.

ThinkPad: Simplicity Wins Out

The venerable line of PC notebooks rolled onto the scene in 1992. While the concept was spot on, there was turmoil at IBM as to what to call it. IBM's pen-computing group wanted to keep it simple; they liked ThinkPad. But IBM's corporate naming committee didn't—it didn't have a number, and every IBM product had to have a number, and how would ThinkPad translate into other languages? Due to the chutzpah of the IBMer who unveiled it, ThinkPad won out, and it was a huge hit for IBM, which eventually sold it to Lenovo in 2005.

Android: Secretive, But Still Not Exciting

You'd think the story behind the naming of the Open Handset Alliance's new open-source platform for mobile devices, which includes the brand-new G1 loaded with Google's goodies, would be cool. But, uh, not so much. Back in 2005, Google quietly acquired a mysterious startup named Android Inc., which had been operating under "a cloak of secrecy" on "making software for mobile phones," reported Businessweek. The result of all Google's secrecy and Internet hype was the debut of T-Mobile's G1 on Oct. 22, 2008.

Wikipedia: Just What It Sounds Like

According to Wikipedia, the name Wikipedia is a portmanteau of wiki (a technology for creating collaborative Web sites) and encyclopedia (you remember, those large books that, as kids, we ruthlessly plagiarized for school book reports). FYI, a portmanteau is a fancy way of saying that we're going to take two words, jam them together, and (hopefully) create a new concept that people will love. So far, so good. In an illustration of the axiom, "the more things change, the more they stay the same," kids and adults now ruthlessly plagiarize Wikipedia instead of encyclopedias.

Mac OS X and 'The Big Cats': Catlike Sleekness and Style

Apple's popular Mac operating system X actually denotes the Roman numeral for 10, since it is the OS's tenth release, following Mac OS 9. To the ire of Apple fanboys, many people do refer to it as the letter "X." More interesting have been the "big cat" code names assigned to each succeeding X release that have stuck with Apple's marketing: Cheetah (10.0), Puma, Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, and the current kitty, Leopard. Snow Leopard has been assigned for the 10.6 release, with rumors that Lynx and Cougar are in the works.

Cofounder Bob Young (pictured) has given multidimensional origins of the red fedora name:

1. It was named after red, which in Western history is "the symbol of liberation and challenge of authority." 2. Cofounder Marc Ewing wore his grandfather's red Cornell lacrosse hat in college and became known for his tech expertise—those with problems went to see the guy in the red hat. 3. Ewing named his software projects Red Hat 1, Red Hat 2 and so on. "So, when he started his Linux project, he just named it Red Hat Linux," Young said. All righty then!
