Tilera Announces the World's First 100-core Processor with the New TILE-Gx Family

captured_Image.png Tilera® Corporation today announced its new TILE-Gx™ family - four new processors from Tilera including the world's first 100-core processor: the TILE-Gx100™.

The TILE-Gx100 offers the highest performance of any microprocessor yet announced by a factor of four.

Moreover, the entire TILE-Gx family raises the bar for performance-per-watt to new levels with ten times better compute efficiency compared to Intel's next generation Westmere processor. And Tilera has simplified many-core programming with its breakthrough Multicore Development Environment™ (MDE) together with a growing ecosystem of operating system and software partners to enable rapid product deployment.

The TILE-Gx family - available with 16, 36, 64 and 100 cores - employs Tilera's unique architecture that scales well beyond the core count of traditional microprocessors. Tilera's two-dimensional iMesh™ interconnect eliminates the need for an on-chip bus and its Dynamic Distributed Cache (DDC™) system allows each cores' local cache to be shared coherently across the entire chip. These two key technologies enable the TILE Architecture™ performance to scale linearly with the number of cores on the chip - a feat that is currently unmatched.

“"The launch of the TILE-Gx family, including the world's first 100-core microprocessor, ushers in a new era of many-core processing. We believe this next generation of high-core count, ultra high-performance chips will open completely new computing possibilities,” said Omid Tahernia, Tilera's CEO. “Customers will be able to replace an entire board presently using a dozen or more chips with just one of our TILE-Gx processors, greatly simplifying the system architecture and resulting in reduced cost, power consumption, and PC board area. This is truly a remarkable technology achievement.”

Australian Pizza Boy Becomes ATM Hacker

captured_Image.png An Australian man has managed to escape a jail sentence despite admitting to stealing nearly AU$30,000 (around US $27,700) from ATMs. According to the prosecutors, he devised the attacks using information from an ATM repair manual found on the Web.

Brian Sommer, 23, from Bundaberg, Queensland, used to work in a pizza shop back in 2007, when he came across an ATM repair manual on the Internet. The document contained default passwords for accessing certain ATM models and information about their options.

The young computer enthusiast realized that he could use the information to access the hard disks of ATMs and alter the settings so that he could withdraw large amounts of cash. He put his idea to test for the first time on a service station's ATM and managed to walk off with $21,120. An hour later, he hit another automated teller machine in Hervey Bay and scored $7,500.

There was a flaw in Sommer's plan, though – it required the use of real credit cards. Therefore, in order to pull off several attacks over a period of seven months, the hacker used cards belonging to himself, his girlfriend, his mother, as well as two friends. This led the authorities knocking on his door.

Windows 7 32-Bit (x86) Direct Download Links

captured_Image.png Windows 7 has been officially launched, but Microsoft never makes available official download links that allow retail customers to download setup installer or ISO image of Windows 7, despite digital downloads have been the sole distribution channel for many that purchases from online store or on MSDN or TechNet subscriptions.

Many mass general public who requires a Windows 7 installation DVD or ISO image has to rely on BT torrent to download Windows 7 ISO from MSDN or TechNet Subscriber Downloads, and it carries the risk of getting fake, incorrect, malicious or infected images instead.
Now the direct download links to the Windows 7 operating system purchased online have been leaked. The installation files of Windows 7 is hosted on the server on domain msft-dnl.digitalrivercontent.net owned by Digital River, one of the delivery partners for Vista and also the brain behind Windows Marketplace e-commerce store.
Unlike Windows Vista, each editions of Windows 7 has its own different and separate download links. The Windows 7 setup installer package comes in 3 parts, which is an executable that starts the extraction or unpacking and installation process, plus setup1.box and setup2.box. After extracting all content to a folder named ExpandedSetup, the installation files should be the same with what contains on a DVD.

http://msft-dnl.digitalrivercontent.net/msvista/pub/X15-79643/setup2.box

After downloading the files, simply double click on the executable, e.g. Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x86.exe to start unloading the box and to install Windows 7. Note that 3 files must be put together in the same directory. You still need a product key to activate installed Windows 7.

And there is hack to create or make bootable Windows 7 DVD ISO images out of downloaded files.

Charge: Man drugged girls for porn videos

captured_Image.png A Missouri man acknowledged drugging young girls and posing them for pictures to be posted on the Internet but denies he did anything wrong, prosecutors said.

An FBI search of James Phillip Edwards' Kansas City, Mo., home and computer disclosed a date-rape video file showing three girls being given ice cream.

Drinks allegedly laced with Ambien, a sedative used to treat insomnia, and another file called "Phil's kindergarten class ages 4-7" -- described as a collage of photographs showing five girls apparently asleep -- the Kansas City Star reported Thursday.

Edwards, 60, was indicted on charges of advertising, possessing and attempting to distribute child pornography, court records showed.

Edwards' wife of 22 years, who requested anonymity, refused to say how her husband knew the girls, saying she wanted to protect the girls' privacy.

Edwards had told investigators he did not believe he had done anything wrong.

"(Edwards') view is that society places arbitrary lines (as in age restrictions) around sexual conduct, with which he doesn't agree," assistant U.S. Attorney Katharine Fincham said. "By his own admission, the defendant has been a danger to the community, unchecked, for years."

Edwards was being held without bond.

VS 2010 and .NET 4.0 Beta 2

captured_Image.png I’m happy to announce that today we shipped the Beta 2 release of Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4.0.  MSDN subscribers can download Beta 2 immediately.

We will be opening up Beta 2 for everyone to download starting this Wednesday.

VS 2010 and .NET Improvements

VS 2010 and .NET 4 bring a huge number of improvements and additions. They include big advances for ASP.NET web development, WPF and WinForms client development, SharePoint development, Silverlight development, data development, parallel computing development, and cloud computing development.  VS 2010 also delivers a ton of improvements in the core IDE, code editors, programming languages, and enterprise design, architect, and testing tools.

TFS 2010 is now easy to install (only 20 minutes to setup source control, bug and work item tracking, build automation, and continuous integration), can be installed on both servers as well as client OS and domain controller machines, and is now included with all MSDN subscriptions of Visual Studio.

I’ve started a series of blog posts that will cover some of the improvements and feature additions in VS 2010 and .NET 4.  Stay tuned to my blog as I post many, many more posts over the coming months.

VS 2010 Product Line SKU Simplifications

With VS 2010 we are simplifying the product lineup and pricing options of Visual Studio, as well as adding new benefits for MSDN subscribers.  With VS 2010 we will now ship a simpler set of SKU options:

  • Visual Studio Express: Free Express SKUs for Web, VB, C#, and C++
  • Visual Studio 2010 Professional with MSDN: Professional development tools as you are used to today with the addition of source control integration, bug tracking, build automation, and more. It also includes 50 hours/month of Azure cloud computing.
  • Visual Studio 2010 Premium with MSDN: Premium has everything in Professional plus advanced development tools (including richer profiling and debugging, code coverage, code analysis and testing prioritization), advanced database support, UI testing, and more.  Rather than buying multiple “Team” SKUs like you would with VS 2008, you can now get this combination of features in one box with VS 2010. It also includes 100 hours/month of Azure cloud computing.
  • Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate with MSDN: Ultimate has everything in Premium plus additional advanced features for developers, testers, and architects including features like Intellitrace (formerly Historical Debugging), the new architecture tools (UML, discovery), test lab management, etc.  It also includes 250 hours/month of Azure cloud computing.
Side by Side Support with VS 2008

VS 2010 and .NET 4.0 can be installed side-by-side on the same machine as VS 2008 and .NET 3.5.  You can install the Beta 2 version on a machine and it will not impact your existing VS 2008 / .NET 3.5 development.

Go-Live License Available

.NET 4 and VS 2010 Beta 2 include a “go-live” license which means you can start using the products for production projects.

Facebook Now Has 30,000 Servers

Facebook Server How many servers does Facebook have? For some time now, the stock answer has been “more than 10,000 servers,” a number the company began using in April 2008. Facebook has continued to use that number, even as it has soared past 300 million users and dramatically expanded its data center space.

We now have an update: Facebook has 30,000 servers supporting its operations. That number comes from Jeff Rothschild, the vice president of technology at Facebook, who discussed the company’s infrastructure in a presentation last week at UC San Diego (link via High Scalability).

“Today we have somewhere in the neighborhood of 30,000 servers,” Rothschild said during the Q&A session following his talk, adding that the number ”will be different today than it was yesterday” because Facebook is adding capacity on a daily basis.

That places Facebook among the largest Internet companies that have publicly discussed their server counts, but still well behind hosting providers Rackspace, 1&1 Internet and OVH, which each house more than 50,000 servers in their data centers. See Who Has The Most Web Servers for more date on the largest infrastructures.

20,000 Servers In 18 Months
It also suggests that Facebook has added about 20,000 servers since early 2008, which explains why it borrowed $100 million in May 2008 to fund server purchases.

Rothschild also shared some huge numbers associated with Facebook’s photo storage operation, which now stores 80 billion images (20 billion images, each in four sizes). Rothschild said the real challenge isn’t storage, but delivery. ”We serve up 600,000 photos a second,” he said.

Schmidt: "Android Adoption Is About To Explode"

Google Android to be Explode During Google's third quarter earnings conference call today, one message came out loud and clear: Google's mobile strategy is starting to pay off. "Android adoption is about to explode," declared CEO Eric Schmidt, explaining that all the "necessary conditions" are set for growth: There are now 12 Android phones out there (most recently the Motorola Cliq) across 32 carriers in 26 countries.

The whole Android strategy, of course, is to offer an low-cost, fully-featured, open-source OS and hand that to the cell phone manufacturers so that they can concentrate more on designing desirable hardware. And what does Google get out of all that? More mobile searches, which could be one of its biggest sources of growth in the coming years.

Already, Google is teasing at what may be in store. During the call, Google executive mentioned at least three times that mobile searches on Google were up 30 percent from the second quarter. Of course, they wouldn't say how many total mobile searches there were or what percentage of all searches they represent (probably still a very small subset), but they are very bullish about the company's mobile prospects.

In response to a question about how material mobile searches are to Google, CFO Patrick Pichette replied:

Again, we don't give the detail numbers. On a quarter over quarter basis, mobile searches grew 30% on Google. It tells you something about the mobile space, the smartphones, and how they are transformative. They are basically transforming how people live on a mobile basis. If we move forward the adoption of these mobile phones by lowering the cost because it is open source, think of how many searches [that will produce].
