First YouTube Video EVER Celebrates Its 5th Anniversary

First-youtube-video It's been a landmark week: we celebrated the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, the 50th anniversary of the birth control pill, and the 20th anniversary of the Hubble Telescope.

April 23 marks a lesser known, but nonetheless important, event: the fifth anniversary of the first video uploaded to YouTube.

YouTube was founded February 14, 2005, but the first video to hit the site--a 19 second clip of YouTube cofounder Jawed Karim at the San Diego zoo--didn't come until April 23, 2005.

Check out the first-ever YouTube video below, then we want to hear from you: What is your favorite YouTube video ever? And why?

Australian Pizza Boy Becomes ATM Hacker

captured_Image.png An Australian man has managed to escape a jail sentence despite admitting to stealing nearly AU$30,000 (around US $27,700) from ATMs. According to the prosecutors, he devised the attacks using information from an ATM repair manual found on the Web.

Brian Sommer, 23, from Bundaberg, Queensland, used to work in a pizza shop back in 2007, when he came across an ATM repair manual on the Internet. The document contained default passwords for accessing certain ATM models and information about their options.

The young computer enthusiast realized that he could use the information to access the hard disks of ATMs and alter the settings so that he could withdraw large amounts of cash. He put his idea to test for the first time on a service station's ATM and managed to walk off with $21,120. An hour later, he hit another automated teller machine in Hervey Bay and scored $7,500.

There was a flaw in Sommer's plan, though – it required the use of real credit cards. Therefore, in order to pull off several attacks over a period of seven months, the hacker used cards belonging to himself, his girlfriend, his mother, as well as two friends. This led the authorities knocking on his door.

Charge: Man drugged girls for porn videos

captured_Image.png A Missouri man acknowledged drugging young girls and posing them for pictures to be posted on the Internet but denies he did anything wrong, prosecutors said.

An FBI search of James Phillip Edwards' Kansas City, Mo., home and computer disclosed a date-rape video file showing three girls being given ice cream.

Drinks allegedly laced with Ambien, a sedative used to treat insomnia, and another file called "Phil's kindergarten class ages 4-7" -- described as a collage of photographs showing five girls apparently asleep -- the Kansas City Star reported Thursday.

Edwards, 60, was indicted on charges of advertising, possessing and attempting to distribute child pornography, court records showed.

Edwards' wife of 22 years, who requested anonymity, refused to say how her husband knew the girls, saying she wanted to protect the girls' privacy.

Edwards had told investigators he did not believe he had done anything wrong.

"(Edwards') view is that society places arbitrary lines (as in age restrictions) around sexual conduct, with which he doesn't agree," assistant U.S. Attorney Katharine Fincham said. "By his own admission, the defendant has been a danger to the community, unchecked, for years."

Edwards was being held without bond.

Facebook Now Has 30,000 Servers

Facebook Server How many servers does Facebook have? For some time now, the stock answer has been “more than 10,000 servers,” a number the company began using in April 2008. Facebook has continued to use that number, even as it has soared past 300 million users and dramatically expanded its data center space.

We now have an update: Facebook has 30,000 servers supporting its operations. That number comes from Jeff Rothschild, the vice president of technology at Facebook, who discussed the company’s infrastructure in a presentation last week at UC San Diego (link via High Scalability).

“Today we have somewhere in the neighborhood of 30,000 servers,” Rothschild said during the Q&A session following his talk, adding that the number ”will be different today than it was yesterday” because Facebook is adding capacity on a daily basis.

That places Facebook among the largest Internet companies that have publicly discussed their server counts, but still well behind hosting providers Rackspace, 1&1 Internet and OVH, which each house more than 50,000 servers in their data centers. See Who Has The Most Web Servers for more date on the largest infrastructures.

20,000 Servers In 18 Months
It also suggests that Facebook has added about 20,000 servers since early 2008, which explains why it borrowed $100 million in May 2008 to fund server purchases.

Rothschild also shared some huge numbers associated with Facebook’s photo storage operation, which now stores 80 billion images (20 billion images, each in four sizes). Rothschild said the real challenge isn’t storage, but delivery. ”We serve up 600,000 photos a second,” he said.

Web creator apologises for his strokes

Web Creator Apologises A LIGHT has been shone on one of the great mysteries of the internet. What is the point of the two forward slashes that sit directly infront of the "www" in every internet website address?

The answer, according to the British scientist who created the world wide web, is that there isn’t one.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee, who wrote the code that transformed a private computer network into the web two decades ago, has finally come clean about the about the infuriating // that internet surfers have cursed so frequently.

The physicist admitted that if he had his time again, he might have made a change, or more specifically, two.

“Really, if you think about it, it doesn’t need the //. I could have designed it not to have the //”, he said, speaking at a symposium on the future of technology in Washington DC last week.

Facebook ensnared in two social networking patent disputes

Facebook Patent Two companies are taking social networking heavyweight Facebook to court over claims that Facebook's website infringes on patents related to personal pages and establishing human relationships. Tele-Publishing Inc, a Boston-based company known for providing personals services to newspapers since the 1980s, is accusing Facebook of violating its patent on "providing a personal page."

Meanwhile, Japan-based Mekiki Co Ltd is suing Facebook for infringing on three of its US patents for a "human relationships registering system."The popular social networking site is facing software patent infringement claims from two less well known companies. A Boston-based company says Facebook infringes on its patent for making a profile page, while a Japanese company says Facebook infringes on its patents for tracking relationship between people. Both suits leave us questioning why the USPTO continues to award patents for software in the first place.

Firefox 3.7, now with Windows 7 jumplist support

Firefox Jumplist Now that Windows 7 is just weeks away from hitting retail shelves, more and more applications are beginning to take advantage of the new shell integration features.

A while back, Google added jumplist support to Google Chrome. Just days ago, a build offering the same functionality finally appeared on Mozilla's Tryserver.

Yes, Firefox fans, you now have the opportunity to test jumplist support in Firefox, as long as you're o.k. with running a Minefield build. As you can see in the image above, the feature is fairly basic right now. In addition to the default Windows 7 "pinned" area, Firefox maintains a list of frequently visited site and allows you to open a new tab or window. I'd like to see a list of recent sites and private browsing added to the list.

You'll find the installer for Windows here. After about 24 hours with the tweaked build, I don't find it to be any less stable than the Minefield nightly. Tried the build out yourself? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Thousands of Hotmail passwords leaked online

Hotmail password leaked We has received information regarding a possible Windows Live Hotmail "hack" or phishing scheme where password details of thousands of Hotmail accounts have been posted online.

An anonymous user posted details of the accounts on October 1 at pastebin.com, a site commonly used by developers to share code snippets.

The details have since been removed but Neowin has seen part of the list posted and can confirm the accounts are genuine and most appear to be based in Europe. The list details over 10,000 accounts starting from A through to B, suggesting there could be additional lists. Currently it appears only accounts used to access Microsoft's Windows Live Hotmail have been posted, this includes @hotmail.com, @msn.com and @live.com accounts.

Neowin has reported this immediately to Microsoft's Security Response Center and to Microsoft's PR teams in the UK and US and we are currently awaiting feedback on the situation. As this is a breaking story please check back frequently as the story will be updated as soon as more information becomes available.

If you are a Windows Live Hotmail user Neowin recommends that you change your password and security question immediately.

Thanks to Chris for the news tip
Update: According to BBC News, Microsoft is currently "investigating the situation and will take appropriate steps as rapidly as possible."

Update 2: Microsoft has now fully confirmed our reports. According to a Microsoft spokesperson "over the weekend Microsoft learned that several thousand Windows Live Hotmail customer's credentials were exposed on a third-party site due to a likely phishing scheme. Upon learning of the issue, we immediately requested that the credentials be removed and launched an investigation to determine the impact to customers. As part of that investigation, we determined that this was not a breach of internal Microsoft data and initiated our standard process of working to help customers regain control of their accounts."

Windows 7 Leaked To eBay

Windows 7 Leaked on eBayPC users don't have to wait until Windows 7 is officially launched later this month to get their hands on Microsoft's new operating system—it's already for sale on eBay, and at cut rate prices. A copy of Windows 7 Ultimate was selling for $167.50 on Sunday, while a copy of the Professional version was going for $132.50.

Numerous other eBay sellers are hawking other editions, at varying prices.

Officially, the full version of Windows 7 Professional is $299, with upgrades going for $199. Windows 7 Ultimate is priced at $319, with the upgrade version at $219. The full version of Windows 7 Home Premium is priced at $199, with an upgrade from Vista or XP costing $119.

Some sellers are pitching retail boxed versions of the software while others, the majority, are offering registration keys that allow users to activate a previously downloaded copy of Windows 7. Microsoft has already released Windows 7 to businesses, so it's possible the sellers obtained access to the software keys through their jobs or other professional contacts.

It's buyer beware, however. The software may lack Microsoft's official Certificate Of Authenticity and other piracy protection measures. So it's questionable whether purchasers will receive support for the product, or whether it will even run at all.

Under some circumstances, reselling software violates Microsoft's licensing terms and may also be illegal. The software maker h as sued numerous eBay members in the past, accusing them of distributing pirated or counterfeited versions of its products.

Windows 7 officially goes on sale Oct. 22nd, with Microsoft planning a series of events and launch parties around the country.

Facebook strips down to Lite site

Facebook Lite The world's biggest social networking site has launched a slimmed-down version for people with slow or poor internet connections.

Facebook has said the Lite site will be faster and simpler because it offers fewer services than the main site.

Initially it is meant to support users in developing countries and where bandwidth constraints make the current version too slow to use.

At the moment it is only available in India and the US.

The company said around 70% of its more than 250 million users were from outside America. Countries in Southeast Asia and Europe are seeing a massive increase in growth where fast internet connections are more common.

News that Facebook was testing the Lite site was first leaked in August.

'Twitter-like'

The options on Facebook Lite are limited to letting users write on their wall, post photos and videos, view events and browse other people's profiles. There are no apps or special boxes.

"It appears, at a quick glance, to be a better site for Facebook newbies or for anyone who finds the current site overwhelming and noisy," said Rafe Needleman at technology website Cnet.

"The new layout feels almost Twitter-like."

Terence O'Brien at Switched.com gave the slimmed-down version of what he called "ol' blue" the thumbs-up because it "strips away distractions".

"The simple site loads noticeably faster, is easier to navigate, and is much easier on the eyes thanks to the lack of people sending you 'virtual booze' or asking you to join their 'vampire fraternity'.

"The new layout seems like a direct challenge to Twitter, which can attribute much of its success to is simplicity and portability," said Mr O'Brien.

Studios Sue to Stop Pirate Bay

The Pirate Bay Sues By Hollywood Studios Pirate Bay makes it easy for users to download copies of shows like "Desperate Housewives" and movies like "Gran Torino."

Millions of users have already taken advantage of Pirate Bay's directory of titles, and there is little that the service's operators could to do prevent those people from continuing to share illegally downloaded content.

However, legal action could force the operators to take technical steps to make it harder to share new files in the future, says Monique Wadsted, a Stockholm-based lawyer representing the Motion Picture Association. "What we want is to make them stop," she said. The major Hollywood studios requested that a Swedish civil court impose an injunction against the operators of file-sharing service Pirate Bay.

The studios are seeking to stop Pirate Bay's operators and its Internet-service provider from making copyrighted movies and TV shows easily available on the Internet. The studios are also asking for an unspecified fine.

Earlier this year, the studios won a victory in criminal court against Pirate Bay's operators for aiding copyright infringement. The litigation highlights the rapidly changing future of the service, which was sold last month to Global Gaming Factory X AB, the Swedish software company. The purchase is pending Global Gaming stockholder approval late next month.

Attacks on South Korean Internet Sites Resume for Third Day

Here the latest news about cyber attack in South Korean.

South Korean Internet sites came under attack from hackers for a third day as the government boosted security to counter intrusions that paralyzed some U.S. services yesterday.

The Web sites of Kookmin Bank and Daum Communications Corp. were being targeted in a new wave of attacks that resumed at 6 p.m. today in Seoul, computer security company Ahnlab Inc. said. The two Web sites were still offline as of 7:30 p.m.

The “highly organized” attacks may come from a state, the National Intelligence Service, or NIS, said today in a statement without naming a country. There is “speculation” North Korea orchestrated the barrage, Kwon Tae Shin, South Korea’s minister for policy coordination, said at a meeting of vice-ministers today in Seoul.

The attacks could be the most serious in South Korea since January 2003, when the “Slammer” worm slowed networks and crippled service, Ahnlab spokeswoman Hwang Mi Kyung said earlier.

South Korea’s NIS and Defense Ministry have previously accused Kim Jong Il’s regime of training a “cyber division” within the North Korean army. So far South Korea has never provided evidence to show the communist nation has hacked South Korean Web sites or disseminated viruses.

‘Cannot Rule Out’

“Of course we cannot rule out the possibility that North Korea is behind these attacks but it’s too early to draw conclusions from what we know so far,” Choi Hee Weon, a senior researcher at Korea Information Security Agency said of this week’s assaults. “It will take time to trace the origin of the attacks.”

South Korea’s Defense Ministry plans to spend 489 billion won ($382 million) next year to beef up its defense against cyber warfare, the ministry said in a budget report today.

The malicious script behind this week’s trouble works by commandeering remote computers and turning them into “zombies” that flood targeted Web sites with a large volume of data. The attacks may target seven organizations, including the Web site of South Korea’s Ministry of Public Administration and Security, Ahnlab said earlier today in an e-mailed statement. Korean- language Web portals known as Naver and Paran are also targeted.

“The level of the attacks were highly organized and meticulously planned, indicating a level of certain organizations or state,” the NIS said.

The U.S. departments of State, Treasury and Transportation were attacked by unidentified hackers during the July 4 holiday weekend, the same day North Korea test-fired seven missiles. In some cases the cyber attacks were continuing, the agencies said yesterday.

Escalating Provocation

If North Korea is behind the attacks it would mark an escalation of provocations against the U.S. and South Korea, Bruce Klingner, a Northeast Asia analyst at the Washington-based Heritage Foundation, said in a statement. Still, there is no “hard evidence” linking North Korea to the attacks, he said.

North and South Korea have been technically at war for more than half a century since their 1950-53 conflict ended without a peace agreement. The two nations exchanged military threats since the North testing a nuclear weapon on May 25, prompting United Nation’s sanctions.

Web sites of some government agencies and banks in South Korea were also attacked yesterday, following similar strikes on 26 sites on July 7, the Korea Information Security Agency said in a statement today.

Seven South Korean banks’ Web sites were paralyzed in the July 7 attacks, but have fully resumed operations, the nation’s regulator Financial Services Commission said today. The lenders suffered no losses from the attacks, it said, without naming them.

Microsoft Working on Patch for IE ActiveX Vulnerability

Microsoft has warned of an Internet Explorer vulnerability involving its Video ActiveX Control that could let an attacker take control of a PC. Microsoft said the vulnerability affects Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.

It offered a workaround to the IE ActiveX hole that it said should also be used for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.

Microsoft Relevant Products/Services has warned of a vulnerability in its Video ActiveX Control that affects Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. The software giant said there have been limited attacks exploiting the vulnerability.

The flaw could be exploited by a visit to a malicious Web site and allow an attacker to take control of a PC. Microsoft said it is working on a security Relevant Products/Services update, and meantime advised that users prevent Microsoft Video ActiveX Control from running in Internet Explorer.

The steps to stop the control in IE are a bit complex, but Microsoft offers a "Fix it for me" option at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972890.

Microsoft also recommends users of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 take these steps.

The Microsoft Video ActiveX Control connects DirectShow filters for video and is used in Windows Media Center. When the control runs in Internet Explorer, it can corrupt the system so that an attacker can run arbitrary code.

Security vendor Symantec said the vulnerability affects IE6 and IE7, but not IE8.

Pirate Bay founders get rich in jail

Pirate Bay Founder Get Rich A little-known Swedish software firm has snapped up file-sharing website The Pirate Bay with the hope of turning the source of legal controversy into a money-spinner that appeals to both users and content providers.

Global Gaming Factory X AB, which operates Internet cafes and provides software, said Tuesday that it had agreed to buy Pirate Bay for 60 million Swedish crowns ($7.7 million).

The website made world headlines in April when the three Swedish founders and a financial backer were each sentenced to one year in jail and ordered to pay a combined $3.6 million in damages for breaching copyright law with the free downloading site, which was one of the biggest sites of its kind on the Internet.

Swedish News Agency TT cited one of the founders, Peter Sunde, as saying that the money would not go directly to him or any of the others sentenced in April.

Sunde told TT that the money would be placed in a company outside Swedish borders and it would be used for Internet projects other than downloading sites.

Pirate Bay could not be immediately reached for comment.

Global Gaming said it believed the website was a viable business with its plans for a new, legal business model.

"We would like to introduce (business) models which entail that content providers and copyright owners get paid for content that is downloaded via the site," the company said in a statement.

USERS AS EARNERS

Global Gaming Chief Executive Hans Pandeya told a news conference that the revamped website would generate money via advertising, supplying storage space and helping telecom operators optimize Internet traffic.

He also said users would be able to earn money by supplying storage space, which would encourage people to use the site.

"That's what is interesting. If you can earn money by file-sharing, it's no big deal to pay for what you download," Pandeya said.

Analysts were unimpressed by the move, comparing it to Napster, an online file-sharing site that quickly lost popularity after it started to charge its users.

"It looks like they are going to Napsterize it," said Leigh Ellis, intellectual property partner at Gillhams Solicitors.

Mark Mulligan, vice president at research firm Forrester, said that many of Pirate Bay's around 20 million users would move on to other free downloading options.

When executed, Michael-www.google.com.exe drops files called reptile.exe and winudp.exe. These are IRC bots with backdoor capability. The file also shows this fake error message:captured_Image.png We detect the dropper and the backdoors as Trojan.Win32.Buzus.bjyo.
