Google Nexus S and the iPhone will be Taken to Space by Atlantis

Nexus S vs iPhoneThe most recent Space Shuttle voyage will take Android alongside the two iPhones as soon as Atlantis launches on Friday, NASA said the day before. Two Google Nexus S phones will be taken to the International Space Station to inflate the features of SPHERES (Synchronized Position Hold, Engage, Reorient, Experimental Satellites), drones used to test spacecraft techniques and satellite maintenance.

The phones will produce the floating pods freedom to be controlled from the ground, cameras for a first-person view, and additional performance than they would cover on their own.

An upgrade will transform the devices into efficient servant robots for the crew, the Intelligent Robotics Group's DW Wheeler told CNET. Among the possibilities are scanning materials or looking for clear flaws. The goal is to ultimately keep ISS crew members paying attention on their missions and not on basic tasks.

The phones' installation is estimated to take place in September or October.

Carrying both of the two major American smartphone platforms can be symbolic for Atlantis. For many, Apple and Google at the same time represent the new forefront of US technology while the Space Shuttle is bowing out over 30 years after it too was the cutting edge. The iPhones and Nexus S phones are both being used to conduct experiments that wouldn't have been achievable on Earth or before modern smartphones.

Atlantis is scheduled to launch at 11:26AM Eastern and, appropriately, will have live streaming coverage optimized both for Android and iPhone viewers.

i3dg turns iphone into 3d display

iPhone-3d-display By using an old-school technique with a half-silvered mirror placed at a 45-degree angle, along with a special app, the i3DG Palm Top Theater turns your iPhone or iPodTouch into a 3D display. By splitting images or video into three layers using the template below, then reflecting them off of the mirrors, it creates the illusion of depth.

iPhone-3d-layer-format

i3DG is invented by Jitsuro Mase, a media artist, and produced by DIRECTIONS, Inc, a Japanese media production company. It has won a prize of an international competition, Ars Electronica Festival 2010 Honorary Mention.

i3DG is a playful analog extension to an iPhone or an iPodTouch, converting its 2D display into a layered 3D view. Using the old technique of placing a half-silvered mirror at a 45-degree angle in front of an image, in a new context, the project extends upon 3D displays and iPhones. As a peripheral gadget, i3DG can support a wide range of different applications, from 3D videos and animations to accelerometer-based games.

Some weakness of the iPhone

captured_Image.png[6]With a variety of applications that are added, making the output of Apple products is the nearest competitor in the class of the Blackberry smart phone.

However, the severity iPhone 3G appeared to have weaknesses that make this product get a 'rift' brands rather than the other.

As quoted from PC Magazine, Saturday (14/3/2009), the system software iPhone 3.0, have a list of weaknesses:

1. Can not cut and paste. Although simple and unimportant, editing is a case the rather important. And after the iPhone 3G, features cutting and copy any posts is no more in this gadget.
2. Not support with the MMS. Clearly, this will more difficult, because with the MMS is not supported, then you can not send images directly.
3. Can not record video. One odd thing is, if the gadget that is already has the top level of technology, but can not record video well.
4. If iPhone users are running some applications such as Twitter, or instant messaging, the user can not read the messages with the quick and concise.
5. Finally, iPhone is often not energy efficient. This means that many applications that are used will make batteries in gagdet is easy-out. So, will be pitied when using a very wide variety of applications, the battery used quickly exhausted.

Apple forgot to copyright OSX, outfit claims

CHEEKY MAC CLONER and thorn in Apple's side, Psystar has claimed that Apple has no right to restrict how the OSX operating system is used... because it doesn't legally own it.

The Miami-based chancers have filed court papers which claim that the Cupertino company "is prohibited from bringing action against Psystar for the alleged infringement of one or more of the plaintiff's copyrights" because of a "failure to register said copyrights with the copyright office as required".

We don't know where Psystar hired its lawyers, but we reckon any law-talking-guy worth his salt should have access to the Interwibble, where a quick search at the US Copyright Office's web site would have unearthed this.

That coupled with the fact that the very act of creating a piece of software means that is protected under US copyright laws leads us to believe that Psystar may well have realised that it is fighting a losing battle and is delaying its inevitable demise under the weight of Apple's legal might.

In a long-running legal battle which has involved suits and counter-suits flying back and forth between the computing Goliath and the nit-picking David (has anyone else noticed that Psytsar rhymes with shyster and is very nearly an anagram of Parasyte?) the Miami company's latest filing also accuses Apple of including undocumented code in its operating system which prevents it from being used on a non Apple computer.

Psystar claims that this is a violation of anti-trust laws and that it should be allowed to do whatever it wants with Apple's operating system.

iPhone Game: Namco Releases i Love Katamari Rolling Game for iPhone and iPod touch

Namco Networks has announced the worldwide availability of i Love Katamari for Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch devices. The game is available now for $7.99 through Apple's App Store. More info about this iPhone game:

In i Love Katamari, the King of All Cosmos has accidentally knocked all the stars out of the sky during a crazy night out. It is up to the pint-sized Prince to put the twinkle back in the heavens. Players are challenged to roll the katamari ball over various objects in each stage. As more and more objects are rolled up, the katamari will increase in size, making it possible to roll-up larger and larger objects.

Based on the console hit Katamari Damacy, which has enjoyed a strong cult-following worldwide for its creative and addictive gameplay, i Love Katamari features levels that take place in five different environments (the Takeda Residence, a backyard, a park, a town and an island). It also features a range of fun-filled modes, such as "Story Mode" (find and roll-up the King's requested object), "Time Attack Mode" (roll up as much as possible in a limited time), "Exact Size Challenge Mode" (match exactly a requested katamari size), and "Eternal Mode" (roll at your own pace without any time or size limit).

Players tilt the phone right, left, front, and back to roll the katamari with precision, taking full advantage of the iPhone/iPod Touch’s accelerometer. While tilt control is the main control method, the game does include some swipe control features. For example, just tap the katamari to stop rolling or touch the 180 turn icon to turn 180 degrees. Players will also enjoy control options familiar from Katamari Damacy like "Parallel shift", "Prince turn” and “Prince dash."

Download Safari 3.2.1 web browser

Experience the web, Apple style, with Safari: the fastest, easiest-to-use web browser in the world. With its simple, elegant interface, Safari gets out of your way and lets you enjoy the web faster than any browser. Safari is free for Mac + PC.

The speed of Safari combined with its intuitive user interface lets users spend more time surfing the web and less time waiting for pages to load. Other Safari features now available to Windows users include SnapBack, one-click access to an initial search query, resizable text fields, and private browsing to ensure that information about an individual’s browsing history isn’t stored.

What’s New in this Version - This update includes stability improvements and is recommended for all Safari users.

A fix for a problem that sometimes allowed form field information to be stored in the page cache, even if the autocomplete function was disabled, was especially noteworthy. Apple learned that this would disclose sensitive information to a local console user, and delivered the fix.

Google Street View, auto-correction prefs in iPhone OS 2.2 beta

A list of enhancements that may arrive in the next version of the iPhone operating system continues to grow with the unearthing of Google Street View support and an auto-correction toggle hidden in the most recent beta of the software.

Last week AppleInsider reported that the first private beta of iPhone Software 2.2 included a redesigned Safari address bar, as well as a new version of the App Store application with interface tweaks and a new bug report feature.

While those changes are visible to developers testing the software, a post at MacRumors details support for a few other features that have thus far remain inaccessible to developers, as they're not yet fully activated in the betas.

Among them is a preference to turn off the iPhone's text auto-correction. A request for this functionality was recently the subject of an online petition that has since received over 20,000 signatures.

Another feature is support for Google Street View in the iPhone's Maps application. Street View provides 360 degree panoramic views of major cities and their surrounding metropolitan areas using still photographs that have been stitched together. Google and T-Mobile recently highlighted support for Street Views on the G1 -- the first Android-based handset due to go on sale later this month.

Separately, and most critically, iPhone Software 2.2 appears to contain the groundwork for emoji icon support. Emoji is a form of Japanese clip art that can be inserted in sentences to spruce up email messages. A lack of emoji support was recently cited by the Wall Street Journal as one of the barriers to adoption faced by the iPhone in Japan.

Apple has offered no indication of when it plans to release iPhone Software version 2.2 and it's unclear whether the aforementioned features will be included in the release or held back for a future update.

Mac OS X and Linux Continue to Erode Windows' Install Base

Apple's Mac OS X and the open source Linux operating systems continue to erode the install base of Microsoft's proprietary platform. According to statistics made available by Net Applications, Windows accounted for a market share of no less than 93.06% back in August 2007.

ne year later, and all the available versions of Windows own just 90.66% of the operating system market – a consistent drop, which places Microsoft dangerously close to the 90% milestone. In fact, by the end of 2008, the Redmond company could see Windows' share of the OS market depreciate under 90%, if the current trends continue.
The release of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 in March 2008 has done little to stop Mac OS X and Linux from gaining additional users. At the end of August 2007, Apple had 6.18% of the operating system market. A year later, and the Cupertino-based hardware company has managed to climb to 7.86% and, considering the explosion of the iPhone's install base to a high of 0.30%, it is now well over 8%. In fact the availability of the iPhone 3G has caused the phone's OS share of the overall market to jump over 58% just from July to August 2008.

According to Net Applications, at the end of the past month, Linux enjoyed a share of 0.93%. The distributions of the open source platform may very well still be under 1%, but the growth from August 2007 is nothing short of spectacular. Last year, Linux only owned a share of 0.47%. August 2008 has seen Linux's install base almost double compared to the same month of 2007, and September 2008 might very well see the platform over the 1% milestone.

Following the rollout of Windows Vista and the June 2008 retail and OEM availability cut-off date, Windows XP is down to just 69.49% in August 2008, having dropped from 79.66% in August 2007. During the same period Windows Vista has increased its market share from 7.41% to 17.85%. Microsoft has in fact been claiming since mid-2008 that it has sold in excess of 180 million licenses of Windows Vista.

Apple iPhone cut/paste found in 2.1 OS & SDK frameworks

Good news for those waiting for the Cut & Paste feature for your Apple iPhone, Apple has so far failed to deliver the cut & paste feature to the iPhone 2.0 operating system, but all is not lost because it seems that Apple has been keeping a lid on things.

It seems they were indeed busy on building their cut/paste framework for the all new iPhone 2.1 OS and iPhone 2.1 SDK.

Apple has only just released the all new iPhone OS revision, iPhone 2.1 OS, to iPhone developers. The new iPhone firmware had by its side the iPhone 2.1 SDK as well.

I am not going to get all technical about the ins and outs of the frameworks; you can read more about that via TUAW. Got to admit we cannot wait to see cut & paste feature on the iPhone.

Apple sues clone maker Psystar

Apple has sued Psystar, the company that for months has been selling the Open Computer, a Mac clone.

The suit was filed July 3 in U.S. District Court in Northern California.

Although the action is listed in the federal court's electronic filing system, the complaint itself is not available.

Of course, if anything, the surprising thing is not that Apple is suing Psystar, but what took them this long?

Psystar has been selling a desktop computer running Apple's Mac OS since April.

I placed inquires at both Apple and Psystar for comment and will update this as soon as I get comment from either.

The suit was noted earlier Tuesday by ZDNet blogger Adrian Kingsley-Hughes and legal blogger Jorge Espinoza.

Update: An Apple representative confirmed it had taken action against Psystar, adding "We take it very seriously when we believe people have stolen our intellectual property."

A Psystar employee said no one was available to comment on the suit.

Microsoft beats Apple, Ubuntu in service reliability

A company that measures internet service reliability has given Microsoft the top score in a test of operating system update services.

Microsoft's Windows Update was available 100 percent of the second quarter of 2008, Pingdom said in a blog posting on Friday. Apple's service was down two hours and 34 minutes, with 99.9 percent uptime, and Canonical's Ubuntu version of Linux was down one day, five hours and 45 minutes, for 98.64 percent uptime.

"Microsoft wins this one hands down," Pingdom said. It noted that Ubuntu's service also is available through mirror sites, however.

The company tested the three services every five minutes.

Pingdom results table

During the second quarter of 2008, Canonical's update service for the Ubuntu operating system had more downtime than Apple's or Microsoft's services.

O2: iPhone 3G orders reached 13,000 per second

U.K. cellular operator O2 has admitted that its online ordering system failed this week - on strength of orders reaching 13,000 per second at points on Monday morning.

In an e-mail to customers, the company sends its apologies to existing iPhone users who tried to take advantage of the company's advance upgrade deal earlier this week. Under the deal, registered iPhone owners were able to contact O2 to place an order for an upgrade, which would be fulfilled on Friday when iPhone 3G ships.

The e-mail carries a host of interesting statistics - not least confirming Apple to have been aware of the level of demand in the U.K., while also being able to supply only a "small proportion" of the iPhones O2 thought it needed for the U.K. market.

"We also used the registration data to keep Apple up to date on the phenomenal interest and to support our orders for the phones with them. We have been working continuously with them to get as much stock for the U.K. as possible. Unfortunately, they have only been able to supply a small proportion of the number of phones we asked for, because they are launching simultaneously in 22 countries. We are confident that over time we will start to get sufficient volume to meet demand, but it is likely that stock will be in very short supply for some weeks to come."

O2 clarified that its online upgrade offer sold out within hours, stressing the network took as many orders from O2 customers as it did in total from other networks.

On the creaking Web site, O2 adds:"We had invested heavily to add a huge amount of additional capacity, 250 times its normal rate, and back-up systems. We tested this carefully in advance. The massive simultaneous crush exceeded even our worst case assumptions. Demand was at 13,000 orders per second. Frankly, we have to admit we just weren't prepared for this unprecedented level of demand. No Web site is."

Apple Slashes Prices For 64GB SSD MacBook Air By $500…Trouble In Paradise?

Maybe because of 4th of July, maybe just out of generosity, or maybe because of the 3G iPhone release, Apple decided to make a delightful surprise to its customers by making an overnight cut of $500 for its most expensive laptop.

AppleInsider noticed that the ultrathin 64GB Solid State Drive MacBook Air now costs $2,598 instead of the $3098 price tag available last week. It’s all been done very quietly, as a result of price cuts in two components, the 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo upgrade, now $100 less, and the Flash memory-based 64GB SSD upgrade, $400 less. However, the price tag didn’t change for the classic hard-disk drive MacBook Air, which continues to cost $1,799.

But there could be other reason behind the new price as well: the MacBook Air was not only expensive, but the price cut also reflects an increased competition on the notebook market, as well as a not so great performance in terms of sales.

MacBook Air features a full-size keyboard design in a sleek and durable aluminum enclosure. The backlit keyboard makes it ideal for dimly lit environments such as airplanes, studios or conference halls, and a built-in ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the brightness of the keys as well as the display brightness for optimal visibility.

Apple delivered the world’s thinnest notebook, and added a price to match that performance. We can’t really say about the MacBook Air that it’s the ideal notebook. It has potential, but the basic configuration was pretty disappointing for many, which may justify slashing the price of the more expensive version just 6 months after its debut.

As much as Apple tried to make a sensation out of its MacBook Air, it turned out that the less you pay, the less satisfied the customer is, and the $3,000 version that everyone wanted was a bit much.

Anyway, some customers will be happy to know that their orders have also been affected by the price cuts, and as MacRumors noted, Apple has automatically adjusted their order to the new price tag.

Want an iPhone but no contract? It will cost $400 extra

DALLAS - AT&T Inc., seeking a wider base of customers for Apple Inc.'s new iPhone, will offer the device without a service contract and instead make users who don't want a two-year commitment pay an additional $400 and get a month-to-month plan.

That gives the biggest US mobile-phone carrier a way to ensure that only people who sign longer contracts will get discounts on the new device, which runs on a speedier third-generation wireless network. The phone will be available July 11 for $199 with an AT&T contract.

AT&T plans to sacrifice 10 to 12 cents a share in earnings this year and next to subsidize the cost of the phone, making it available for half the price of the older version. Apple plans to sell 10 million iPhones worldwide in 2008.

AT&T and Apple revised sales plans after some customers used software tricks to make the previous version of the device run on other networks.a

An unlocked iPhone can run on T-Mobile USA Inc.'s network in the United States and on international networks that use the global system for mobile communications. The phone won't work on the networks of Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel Corp. because they use incompatible technology.

Unlike with the older model, customers won't be able to take the new iPhone home from the store without connecting it to AT&T's network, so even buyers of the no-contract phone will have to pay for some AT&T service. In the United States, the device will only be available in AT&T and Apple stores, and not online as before. Service plans begin at $69.99 a month.

The iPhone will be available at the no-contract price sometime after July 11, AT&T said. The $199 price is available to new customers, people who purchased the previous iPhone model, and current subscribers who have neared the end of their contracts, if they sign up for two more years of service.

A version of the phone with additional storage will cost $299 with a contract and $699 without one. AT&T subscribers who already are under a contract and aren't yet eligible for the discount can buy the iPhone for $399 or $499.

The new price details indicate Apple is getting about $550 for each iPhone AT&T subsidizes, up from an earlier estimate of $350, said Ben Reitzes, a Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. analyst. The companies haven't disclosed how much AT&T is paying Apple.
