New Platform in Windows 7 Enables Remote Connectivity to Virtual Desktops

Even though Microsoft is yet to officially breathe a single word on the matter, the virtualization capabilities of Windows 7 will also evolve in comparison to what is offered with Windows Vista today.

Vista was the Redmond giant's first client for which virtualization was introduced into the End User License Agreement, and Windows 7 will take it one step further. The next iteration of the Windows client will feature a solution designed to permit end users to access remotely virtualized operating systems running on top of a hypervisor.

"As part of hosted desktop virtualization initiative, in Win7 we are building a platform with suite of products that enables remote connectivity to virtual desktops running under Hyper-V via thin or traditional clients. The products enables remote desktop and application publishing, provisioning and connecting to VMs via RDP and management which leverages SCVMM. The platform will also provide rich value-add opportunities for ISVs in virtualization space," Microsoft revealed.

The Redmond company is already offering management tools for the Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V for Windows Vista SP1, and it looks like an evolved platform based on the utilities will be featured as a default component in Windows 7. This because the package brings to the table Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in dubbed Hyper-V Manager which is designed to permit users to access Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V from Vista SP1. But also the Virtual Machine Connection set up to allow interactive sessions with a Hyper-V virtual machine from Vista SP1.

Microsoft has yet to clarify what the new virtualization platform being built into Windows 7 will offer, but its development falls under the lead of the Presentation and Hosted Desktop Virtualization team. "The PHDV team owns key technologies related to Microsoft’s virtualization strategy. The PHDV technology area encompasses desktop and application virtualization in Hyper-V as well as classic Terminal Server. These product areas enable scalable, efficient, and seamless access to centralized desktop/applications from a wide range of client devices via the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)," the company stated.

Build a Web Chat Application using ASP.Net 3.5, LINQ and AJAX (in C# 3.5)

A Java Programmer friend of mine once asked me if I have ever built a web chat application. I said "No". He then asked me if I were to build a really simple, monitored, bare minimum, working web chat application, how long do I think will it take (something to that effect). I said, "I don't know". A few days had passed, one lazy evening, I was surfing the web looking for ASP.Net web chat applications. It seems that I can't find one that is simple enough to implement. So I decided to just build something simple from scratch. When I say simple, that just means that: I'm am going to try to build this web chat as fast as possible, with very minimal planning or architecturing. So what you will read below are my notes after I got done building the web chat application. Here's an example of how the chatroom page looks like:

LINQ Chatroom
Requirements:
We will create a very simple web chat application using the latest ASP.Net 3.5 technologies from scratch just for fun. This chat application will contain 2 web pages, the login page and the chatroom page. Most of the tutorial will be focused on the chatroom page. Some of the things that I want to accomplish are as follows:

  • Must be accessible anywhere, and no need to download and install any components. This is why we're going to create a web chat.
  • Web chat must be "flicker-free". This is where AJAX will be very handy.
  • We want to be able to monitor chat conversations using a database. We will use MS SQL Server to store conversations and user information.
  • No use of frames. I read somewhere that frames are evil, and I kind of agree with that.
  • Use of dynamic SQL using LINQ-to-SQL instead of stored procedures for a super fast coding. Remember that we're doing this for fun.
  • No use of Application Variables. I've seen some examples on the web that uses application variables and I just don't like this idea.

Microsoft to Wrap up New Windows 8 Testing Infrastructure by Mid-2009

With Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and Windows XP Service Pack 3 out of the way in the first half of the year, Microsoft is focusing on Windows 7 and Windows 7 Server, the next iterations of the Windows client and server platforms.

But the Redmond company is also looking ahead, building Midori, a non-Windows operating system derived from the Microsoft Research's Singularity project, but also Windows 8, the successor of Windows 7. An illustrative example is the work being done by the Windows Test Technologies team, which aims to build a new testing infrastructure for Windows 8 by mid-2009.

"WTT (Windows Test Technologies) is the foundation for how testing is done in Windows and in many other groups at Microsoft, such as MSN and SQL. It is the test automation framework used by all these teams," Microsoft revealed.

Microsoft part-time Chairman Bill Gates did indicate that the Windows team is doing amazing things with Windows 7, but he failed to disclose details, or to offer an insight into what is cooking for Windows 8. Back in October 2007, Microsoft promised that the Windows Test Technologies team is set up to virtually "change how the Windows division ships products."

The reference is related to all the efforts to overhaul the entire Windows test organization. Apparently, Windows 7 is left out of the equation, and only Windows 8 will be able to benefit from the revamped WTT.
"The WTT team is looking to make significant changes to it's infrastructure for Windows 8. We want to address all the major problems our customers have faced over the last few years by developing a truly scalable and reliable testing infrastructure. This is a huge opportunity to drastically revamp WTT over the coming 18 months," the Redmond company revealed in a resource published in October 2007.

But just because WTT will be overhauled sometime by April 2009 does not mean that Windows 8 testing will debut at the same time. In fact, Windows 7 is expected by the end of the following year, even though Microsoft is officially pointing to a three year period starting from the general availability of Windows Vista, which was January 30, 2007.

Microsoft seeks partners for new bid for Yahoo: WSJ

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Microsoft is considering a new attempt to buy part of Yahoo in a deal with other media companies that would likely see a break-up of the Internet firm, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

Microsoft has approached Time Warner and News Corp, among other media companies, to assess their interest in different parts of Yahoo, according to sources close to the discussions quoted by the newspaper.

The software giant has in the past suggested an arrangement under which it would acquire Yahoo's search engine business and another partner would join forces with what was left of the Internet firm, the Journal reports.

According to the same sources, Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer asked Yahoo president Roy Bostock for a meeting to discuss a new idea involving other partners. The meeting, set for Monday, was subsequently cancelled by Microsoft.

Microsoft has ruled out making another bid for the whole of Yahoo, after it withdrew a nearly 48-billion-dollar offer in May, and Yahoo announced June 12 that discussions with the software giant on a tie-up had ended.

Yahoo has since launched several moves to persuade investors that it made the right decision, including a new advertising deal with rival Google.

However, the market appears unconvinced. Yahoo shares have dropped 28 percent since February 1, the day that the Microsoft offer was announced.

Want an iPhone but no contract? It will cost $400 extra

DALLAS - AT&T Inc., seeking a wider base of customers for Apple Inc.'s new iPhone, will offer the device without a service contract and instead make users who don't want a two-year commitment pay an additional $400 and get a month-to-month plan.

That gives the biggest US mobile-phone carrier a way to ensure that only people who sign longer contracts will get discounts on the new device, which runs on a speedier third-generation wireless network. The phone will be available July 11 for $199 with an AT&T contract.

AT&T plans to sacrifice 10 to 12 cents a share in earnings this year and next to subsidize the cost of the phone, making it available for half the price of the older version. Apple plans to sell 10 million iPhones worldwide in 2008.

AT&T and Apple revised sales plans after some customers used software tricks to make the previous version of the device run on other networks.a

An unlocked iPhone can run on T-Mobile USA Inc.'s network in the United States and on international networks that use the global system for mobile communications. The phone won't work on the networks of Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel Corp. because they use incompatible technology.

Unlike with the older model, customers won't be able to take the new iPhone home from the store without connecting it to AT&T's network, so even buyers of the no-contract phone will have to pay for some AT&T service. In the United States, the device will only be available in AT&T and Apple stores, and not online as before. Service plans begin at $69.99 a month.

The iPhone will be available at the no-contract price sometime after July 11, AT&T said. The $199 price is available to new customers, people who purchased the previous iPhone model, and current subscribers who have neared the end of their contracts, if they sign up for two more years of service.

A version of the phone with additional storage will cost $299 with a contract and $699 without one. AT&T subscribers who already are under a contract and aren't yet eligible for the discount can buy the iPhone for $399 or $499.

The new price details indicate Apple is getting about $550 for each iPhone AT&T subsidizes, up from an earlier estimate of $350, said Ben Reitzes, a Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. analyst. The companies haven't disclosed how much AT&T is paying Apple.

Microsoft Makes Vista SP1 Play Nice with the VIA 64-bit CPU

Even though the processor market is dominated by Intel, with AMD struggling to expand its elbow room, new players are able to find a little room to breathe.

VIA Technologies is an illustrative example in this respect, with its products embraced even by Microsoft. However, the marriage between Windows client and server operating systems and VIA chips is not necessarily a match made in heaven. Case in point: computers with Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 RTM/SP1 have problems recognizing the new 64-bit CPU from VIA Technologies.

"Microsoft has released a hotfix to support the new 64-bit CPU from VIA Technologies. You can apply this hotfix on computers that are running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). This hotfix adds the ID and vendor strings for the new VIA 64-bit CPU. After you apply this hotfix, computers that are running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista SP1 can recognize the VIA 64-bit CPU and the system model that is based on this kind of CPU," the Redmond giant stated.

The hotfix became available at the end of June 2007, but is yet to be integrated into all copies of Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008. Usually, Microsoft waits for the next service pack release to incorporate hotfixes that are not released through Windows Update, but it looks like in this situation the company will indeed turn the fix into an update. Still, for the time being the update designed to make Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 play nice with the x64 processor from VIA has to be ordered directly from Microsoft.

"A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix," Microsoft informed.
